Care for the Environment: Composting workshops

Colegio Concertado Casvi Boadilla has organised a series of workshops to promote environmental education and care for the environment among its students. During this week, the students of 1st Bachillerato and 1st ESO have become the teachers of their primary school classmates, giving theoretical and practical workshops on composting and vermicomposting to primary school students. The activity aims not only to teach about organic waste management, but also to raise awareness of the importance of sustainability and recycling in everyday life.

THE IMPACT OF COMPOSTING WORKSHOPS ON ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

This activity has been a perfect opportunity for younger students to understand how the environment can benefit from the proper use of organic waste. During the sessions, both secondaryand high school students have explained how microorganisms and earthworms play a fundamental role in the decomposition of organic waste, transforming it into compost, a natural and useful fertiliser to enrich the soil.

In addition, they have shown how composting and vermicomposting work, and have detailed the steps to follow in this process, highlighting the importance of separating waste properly to contribute to a healthier planet.

These types of activities also help to generate greater interest among children in issues such as recycling and sustainability, two key aspects to ensure a greener future. The workshops have not only been a learning exercise, but also a practice that, in the long term, will contribute to improving environmental habits in the school community.

CASVI BOADILLA STUDENTS PROMOTE CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT WITH COMPOSTING

In addition, primary school pupils have been encouraged to actively participate in the separation of organic waste in the canteen, using bins specifically designed for this purpose. With this small gesture, the aim is to promote a culture of recycling and awareness from the earliest educational stages, which contributes to strengthening everyone’s commitment to sustainability.

As part of the action, students have also been encouraged to bring fruit in their lunches, a healthy alternative that reduces the amount of plastic waste generated. This type of practice not only improves the health of the students, but also helps to reduce waste.

The joint effort between secondary and primary school students reinforces the idea that we can all do our bit to improve the environment, making our surroundings a more sustainable and healthy place for everyone. Awards 10: the success of our students

Academic talent and human values have once again been the protagonists in a new edition of the Boadilla del Monte 10 Awards, an initiative of the City Council that seeks to recognise the most outstanding students in the municipality. Casvi Boadilla has been one of the schools with award-winning students, and we want to share this pride with our entire educational community.

WHAT DO THE 10 BOADILLA DEL MONTE AWARDS RECOGNISE?

Boadilla del Monte Town Council ‘s Plan 10 is an annual educational programme that rewards the academic excellence and social commitment of Primary, Secondary and Baccalaureate students from schools in the municipality.

The aim is not only to highlight the best marks, but also to highlight exemplary attitudes and behaviour. For this reason, the 10 Boadilla del Monte Awards focus on two main areas:

El comité ambiental del colegio ha participado en el encuentro online de Ecoescuelas, que ha reunido a distintos centros con proyectos comprometidos con la sostenibilidad. Durante la jornada, los representantes del colegio han compartido su experiencia y han escuchado propuestas de otras ecoescuelas, ampliando su perspectiva sobre la acción ambiental.

Han asistido alumnos de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria, así como representantes de Educación Primaria, y el alumnado de 5º y 6º de Primaria ha participado en la franja final del encuentro, enriqueciendo la diversidad de voces implicadas.

A RECOGNITION THAT ENCOURAGES US TO CONTINUE EDUCATING IN VALUES.

La jornada online se ha desarrollado como una experiencia de aprendizaje colaborativo y reflexión activa, en la que el alumnado ha podido conocer prácticas de otras escuelas, dialogar sobre propuestas innovadoras y conectar su trabajo ambiental con objetivos globales de sostenibilidad. Las sesiones de Ecoescuelas han destacado por ser espacios altamente participativos que inspiran a los jóvenes a actuar en sus entornos cotidianos, reforzando el liderazgo estudiantil y la toma de decisiones colectivas para el cuidado del planeta.

Esta participación ha demostrado que el compromiso con la educación ambiental puede articularse de forma creativa y colaborativa, enseñando que el aprendizaje sobre sostenibilidad no solo se reconoce por los resultados, sino por la actitud reflexiva, la colaboración y la acción responsable en el presente y para el futuro.

Pocket-sized wastewater treatment plants: Environmental education in action

This week, the students of 1st E.S.O, in the subject of biology, have worked on developing their “pocket water treatment plants”. This learning tool has allowed them to better understand how WWTPs (Wastewater Treatment Plants) work and their importance in the urban water cycle. Thanks to these activities, our students are learning to use the scientific method in a very entertaining way.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION: A FUNDAMENTAL PILLAR

Antarctic conservation: penguin sponsorship

The start of the Arctic Campaign has arrived, and this year, the penguin sponsorship experience has become a unique educational activity. Thanks to a videoconference with the Spanish Antarctic Base Gabriel de Castilla, some of our students have been able to interact directly with the people in charge of the base.

HOW DOES PENGUIN SPONSORSHIP WORK IN ANTARCTICA?

This programme not only seeks to raise awareness about the importance of Antarctic wildlife conservation, but also how, with small gestures, we can all contribute to the protection of the environment. This year, the campaign is enriched with the active participation of students and the unique experience of connecting with Antarctica.

Penguin sponsorship in Antarctica allows participants to contribute to the welfare of these iconic animals. Through this activity, participants help to ensure that penguins on Deception Island can complete their life cycle, from survival to the ability to breed and care for their chicks.

This symbolic gesture not only has a direct impact on penguin conservation, but also strengthens the commitment to the environment and natural balance.

In addition, leading this cause is the father of one of our students, Ruiz Robles, who, as head of logistics in Antarctica for the Spanish Army, has played a key role in operations on the white continent. His direct connection to the expedition provides a unique perspective for the students, allowing them to understand the impact and importance of scientific and logistical missions in the region.

THE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE OF PENGUIN SPONSORSHIP IN THE ANTARCTIC

Thanks to a videoconference with the Spanish Antarctic Base Gabriel de Castilla, students from 6th B and 4th A of our primary school, as well as 1st C of our secondary school, were able to interact directly with the people in charge of the base and learn more about the extreme weather conditions and research projects in Antarctica.

In addition, students from the General Baccalaureate who are studying Biology have participated in the connection, and have had the opportunity to interact actively during the talk, learning first-hand about life in Antarctica and the impact of scientific research.

Algorithms in the digital education world

Nowadays, algorithms should be a fundamental part of the digital educational world, since they are part of our daily life, even though we often do not see them. That’s why, Guillermo Cánovas, renowned teacher and expert on teenagers, has visited our school in Boadilla del Monte to give a very special talk to primary and secondary students about the impact of algorithms and artificial intelligence in their daily lives.

UNDERSTANDING ALGORITHMS IN THE DIGITAL EDUCATIONAL WORLD: ALGORITHMIC LITERACY DAY AT CASVI BOADILLA

During the talk, our students learned how algorithms are present in every aspect of their lives, from social networks to personalized search engine recommendations. Cánovas has explained how artificial intelligence is behind these technologies, influencing their digital decisions and behaviors, and how a proper understanding of these processes is essential for effective digital literacy.

This type of activities in our school in Boadilla del Monte are essential to have a training in the digital educational world, which prepares our students for the challenges of the future.

THE DIGITAL FUTURE OF OUR STUDENTS

Equipados con palas y azadones, los estudiantes han plantado especies como castaños, nogales, granados y nísperos. Además, han utilizado la plataforma Life Terra para etiquetar y registrar los árboles plantados, asegurando su seguimiento a través de un mapa global, lo que permitirá a los nuestros alumnos monitorear el crecimiento de los árboles en los años venideros.

Esta actividad no solo les ha permitido a los alumnos de nuestro colegio de Boadilla del Monte conectar de manera profunda con la naturaleza, sino que también les ha brindado una visión clara de su rol como agentes de cambio en la protección del planeta. Composting ecological sustainability and social inclusion

The Juan XXIII Foundation has organized a workshop focused on ecological sustainability and social inclusion, where the students of the Boadilla school have learned about composting and the importance of reducing organic waste. This activity has also promoted the integration of people with intellectual disabilities, highlighting the importance of an inclusive and sustainable future.

UNDERSTANDING ALGORITHMS IN THE DIGITAL EDUCATIONAL WORLD: ALGORITHMIC LITERACY DAY AT CASVI BOADILLA

In this practical workshop, students of 1st ESO and 1st Bachillerato of our Casvi Boadilla school have explored how composting and circular economy can contribute to a more sustainable world.

With the help of July and Morena, members of the foundation and experts in these issues, and through educational activities, they have learned to manage organic waste, promoting both environmental protection and social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. The day has shown that caring for the planet and promoting equality are two sides of the same coin.

COMPOSTING AS A TOOL TO PROMOTE ECOLOGICAL SUSTAINABILITY

Composting allows transforming organic waste into valuable resources such as natural fertilizer, and is one of the main practices of the circular economy. During the day, our students discovered how to measure factors such as temperature, humidity and pH in compost bins, understanding how this process contributes to reducing the carbon footprint and improving soil quality.

FOSTERING SOCIAL INCLUSION THROUGH EDUCATIONAL AND PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES

The workshop has highlighted the importance of social inclusion by actively involving people with intellectual disabilities in the educational process. These projects enable all members of society to participate in caring for the environment, creating a community that is more just, equitable and committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2030).

2nd grade children become mini-farmers

The 2nd grade students had a wonderful experience in the school garden with Don Angel and his teachers. During the visit, our head teacher shared with them valuable knowledge about the cultivation and care of plants.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION: A FUNDAMENTAL PILLAR

The students also took a close look at the pumpkin flowers, identifying for the first time the difference between the male and female flowers, which are essential to the pollination process.

They also had the opportunity to harvest the last fruits of the season: cherry tomatoes, Italian peppers, eggplants, zucchini, watermelons, melons, cucumbers and pumpkins.

Undoubtedly, an educational day that will remain engraved in the memory of the children and that reinforces the school’s commitment to environmental education.

This activity not only allowed them to connect directly with nature, but also provided hands-on learning and fostered respect for the environment.

Ecoschools: Raising our voice to care for our environment

Our students have created these original audios to raise awareness about the importance of caring for our environment and natural resources and to participate in the national contest of radio spots of the Ecoescuelas network.

One of the topics chosen by the students is water. This resource is at the epicenter of sustainable development and is fundamental for socioeconomic development, energy, food production, ecosystems and human survival. Our students have inquired about the main challenges in relation to access to water worldwide, what is the water footprint or sponge cities and become creative communicators to convey an important message “every drop counts”.

On the other hand, the students have investigated the situation of the forests in our community: whether they are mature or young forests, whether they are in regression or in recovery and what are their main threats. Their objective was to make proposals for improvements in their wedges to make the environment resilient to climate change, contribute to conserving biodiversity and lower CO2 levels.

Casvi Boadilla school renews the Ecoescuelas Green Flag thanks to the project “Every drop counts”.

Last week, our school renewed the Green Flag of the Ecoescuelas program, which recognizes schools that follow a specific methodology when working with students and the educational community, focusing on respect for the environment and environmental care.

In addition, within this context, our students have participated in the “Ecoexperiencia para crear conciencia” (Eco-experience to create awareness) Good Environmental Practices Contest, organized by Salud Ambiental en la Escuela (Environmental Health at School). The Ecoescuelas program awards a Green Flag to schools that follow a seven-step methodology that consists of creating an environmental committee, conducting an eco-audit, designing an action plan, monitoring and evaluating the plan, developing a code of conduct, linking the program to the curriculum, and informing and communicating the program to the local community.

In this sense, the student body plays a very important role in the project presented to the committee This year’s project is called “Every Drop Counts”, a study that arose from our 2nd grade classmates. Primary in its unit of inquiry on good habits. Based on this concern, an eco-audit was carried out to reflect on water consumption at the center and an action plan was drawn up, including activities to raise awareness of responsible water use.

It was the students themselves who analyzed data on rainfall, temperatures and the situation of reservoirs in Spain. The project involves students in various educational activities, such as studying the water cycle, visiting a water exhibition, and participating in contests and events related to the water theme. In addition, concrete measures are implemented in the school, such as the efficient use of faucets, cisterns and the reuse of water in the dining room and playgrounds.

The project seeks to raise awareness of the importance of water and promote concrete actions for its conservation and sustainable use, implementing concrete measures within the center, such as the efficient use of faucets, cisterns and the reuse of water in the dining room and courtyards.

The students responsible for the project were also in charge of presenting it to the Head of Studies of the school, who decided to share it with the rest of the educational community at the entrance of the school, where it is available for anyone interested in knowing a little more about it.
