Childhood cancer is one of the diseases that has the greatest impact on families around the world, but it is also one of the causes that arouses enormous solidarity. In our school, we have had the opportunity to learn more about this cause and do our bit thanks to the collaboration with the Aladina Foundation and Unoentrecienmil who work tirelessly to improve the lives of children and teenagers with cancer.

During this month of February, dedicated to the fight against cancer, the 4th and 5th grade students of our primary school have had the opportunity to attend educational talks given by the staff of the Aladina Foundation. During these talks, the students have been able to learn about the difficulties faced by children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer, as well as the advances in their treatment and the ways in which society can support them.

El Bachillerato Internacional ha ofrecido a nuestros alumnos la oportunidad de comprender diversas perspectivas culturales y sociales. Han participado en experiencias que han reforzado la colaboración, la conciencia global y la resolución de conflictos.

Mediante un aprendizaje personalizado los alumnos han conseguido alcanzar metas específicas, promoviendo tanto el desarrollo intelectual como emocional. Esta combinación ha creado un entorno de aprendizaje dinámico que ha estimulado la motivación y el compromiso de todos.

Al integrar la metodología IB, Casvi Boadilla ha consolidado un modelo educativo que prepara a los alumnos para enfrentar retos con pensamiento crítico y creatividad.

The Boadilla Municipal Police has launched a new edition of the Tutor Agent programme, aimed at 4th-year pupils at our state-subsidised primary school , with a very topical theme: social media safety for children.

This programme aims to educate pupils about the benefits and risks of using social media and online video games, emphasising the importance of protecting their identity and privacy in the digital environment.

STUDENT LEARNING: INTERNET SAFETY AND RESPONSIBLE USE

During the session, the guardians emphasised the importance of caution when posting personal photos, whether of themselves or their peers, and of monitoring who they communicate with on digital platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram or online games. They addressed common threats on the internet, including identity theft, contact with strangers and computer viruses, explaining how to identify and prevent them.

A key part of the workshop was informing our students about who to turn to if they encounter any digital problems: parents, teachers or the local police, thereby fostering a network of support and trust to ensure their safety.

AWARENESS AND PREVENTION IN THE CLASSROOM: SAFETY ON SOCIAL MEDIA

The Tutor Agent unit works closely with schools, offering support, road safety training and educational talks on bullying and social media safety. This unit, created to be a friendly and trustworthy police force within the school environment, has accumulated experience in teaching about digital risks, using teaching materials such as videos to better convey its messages.

This programme has been part of a comprehensive educational strategy in Boadilla that has sought to strengthen coexistence and prepare students for today’s technological challenges.

The digital divide between parents and children has been a reality, and the Tutor Agent has helped to bridge that gap by supporting families in educating their children on the responsible and safe use of social media.

¿POR QUÉ ES TAN IMPORTANTE CELEBRAR EL DÍA MUNDIAL DE LA DIABETES?

During this month of February, dedicated to the fight against cancer, the 4th and 5th grade students of our primary school have had the opportunity to attend educational talks given by the staff of the Aladina Foundation. During these talks, the students have been able to learn about the difficulties faced by children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer, as well as the advances in their treatment and the ways in which society can support them.

According to the World Health Organisation, cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality in childhood and adolescence. In fact, every year around 400,000 children and adolescents between the ages of 0 and 19 suffer from cancer worldwide. In Spain, more than 1,600 cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2025.

THE "PAÑUELO CHALLENGE": CREATIVITY AND SOLIDARITY IN THE SERVICE OF THE FIGHT AGAINST CHILDHOOD CANCER

One of the most exciting activities we carried out at school was the PañueloChallenge, in which both infant and primary school students have actively participated. This challenge has allowed children to design their own scarves and write messages of support for children and adolescents fighting cancer.

More than 60% of all children diagnosed with cancer require long-term hospitalization due to intensive treatment. Hence, the importance of this type of campaign to help provide vital emotional support during these difficult times.

BASKET DAY AGAINST CHILDHOOD CANCER

Casvi Boadilla’s school has also joined the initiative “Basketball Day against Childhood Cancer”, which consisted in donating one euro for each basket scored during the basketball championships held on February 15th and 16th. However, our school has gone further: organizing several games in which teachers and students have shared the basketball court to join forces in this noble cause.

By contributing one euro as a solidarity ticket to watch the matches and with the collaboration of all the players, we managed to raise a total of 1,468 euros, which will go to research on childhood cancer. This event has not only been an excellent opportunity to practice sports, but also to promote solidarity among the entire educational community, demonstrating that when we all unite, the results are greater.

In Eurocolegio Casvi Boadilla we have celebrated the book day with different activities to promote all the benefits of reading to children.. Our goal is to make the children realize not only the importance of reading, but all the information they can acquire through them. We also wanted to emphasize the importance of choosing the right book for their age and tastes, as the benefits of reading to children are multiple.

Los beneficios de la lectura en los niños son múltiples, por ello desde pequeños inculcamos en nuestros alumnos la pasión por los libros.

Benefits of reading to children

  • Reading will bring children new knowledge, that is one of its main benefits. To do this they will need to be able not only to read at an adequate speed, but also to comprehend the content. Their acquisition of knowledge in school will depend to a large extent on their reading comprehension.
  • Reading also helps them improve their attention and concentration.
  • Helps develop critical and creative  thinking.
  • It increases the  students’ vocabulary  and helps to reinforce and improve spelling.

  • It improves students’ communication skills, both written and oral, because by gaining more vocabulary and discovering new expressions they will be able to use them in the appropriate context in their daily lives.
  • It opens the mind to new worlds and new stories, thus developing an open mind of the students and improving, as mentioned above, creative thinking.
  • Combats boredom, that is, if we encourage reading from the time they are small, they will see reading as a great adventure and a moment to have fun that also brings them all the above benefits.

Not all education systems are the same, but there is no good or bad system. There are differences between educational systems. The world has changed over the years and with it, education has evolved, as there are many schools and universities in the world. we have been adapting our teaching in the Spanish educational system to train students who are capable of solving the problems of a future society; when they finish their schooling, they will have to face studying and working far from their environment, with peers from other cultures, who may not speak the same language as they do. For this reason, it is very important for schools to promote the multilingualism and open-mindedness.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TRADITIONAL AND INNOVATIVE EDUCATION SYSTEMS

No todos los sistemas educativos son iguales, pero no hay uno bueno ni uno malo. Existen diferencias entre los sistemas educativos.

Traditional system vs.
transdisciplinary learning

Advantages of the traditional system:

  • For the teacher, the content and the way of teaching the class does not vary.
  • The student learns by memorization, not having a true meaningful learning.

Disadvantages of the traditional system:

  • The teacher has the knowledge, the content he teaches is not questioned.
  • The student is only a receiver of knowledge, there is no real thinking, his attitude is passive, not creative; and he is only evaluated by standardized tests.
  • In the current educational system, each discipline is learned separately, with no emphasis on its application to real life.
  • There is no investment in teacher training, as innovation and new forms of teaching are neglected.

Advantages of transdisciplinary learning:

  • The teacher accompanies the students in their learning, with new activities that encourage their reasoning and critical thinking.
  • The student is the protagonist of the teaching process, learns through research and problem solving contextualized in life, develops creativity and skills while acquiring knowledge.
  • We do not teach mathematics, language, science or music separately, we work in a transdisciplinary way, this means that we work at the same time between disciplines, through them and beyond single or separate disciplines, being a unit of knowledge not parceled, achieving a holistic and lasting learning.
  • The student obtains a lasting learning experience, thus acquiring the ability to solve problems of daily life.
  • The center has a team of teachers in continuous training, with knowledge of methodologies that put the student at the center of the learning process.

Disadvantages of transdisciplinary learning:

  • The teacher must have adequate training, otherwise he/she will not adequately guide the students.
  • The student does not use memorization as much.
  • The center must have adequate facilities, not only inside the classrooms, but also outside in order to be able to carry out outdoor projects.

These are the main differences between the educational systems. Taking into account all of the above points, and knowing that we must be prepared to respond to a changing society, it is through the International Baccalaureate that we provide our students with the necessary tools to face future challenges. For it is by doing, through experimentation and inquiry, that they acquire skills, abilities and aptitudes. And they adopt an active attitude of lifelong learning, in addition to developing the attributes of the profile: inquirers, informed and educated, open-minded, thinkers, good communicators, upright, caring, bold, balanced and reflective.

And this is demonstrated by countries such as Estonia or Finland, which usually appear in the rankings for having the best educational system in the world, because they use participatory methodologies and through transdisciplinary learning seek to develop creativity and critical thinking of their students, carrying out projects that bring them closer to real-life situations, to reach actions that make our world a better place.
